Aventura traffic is mall traffic, causeway traffic and a train station
Aventura is on the mainland, not on the barrier island. The Intracoastal is its eastern edge. I-95 is to the west. The county line with Hallandale Beach, in Broward, is the north side. The 2020 Census counted 40,242 residents on about 2.65 square miles. The 2020–2024 estimates are about 39,900. The average commute is about 32 minutes. This is not a one-road city. It is a short city with three very different kinds of driving packed together.
Biscayne Boulevard (US-1) is the commercial spine, and Aventura Mall is the place everyone already knows how to get stuck. West Dixie Highway, farther west along the railroad, is where Brightline’s Aventura station opened to passengers on December 24, 2022. The station address published at the opening is 19796 West Dixie Highway, in Ojus, just west of the city, with a shuttle to the mall and a few hundred parking spaces. People drive there, park, and also get dropped off. East of US-1, the William Lehman Causeway (SR 856) is how Aventura reaches Sunny Isles Beach. A weekend afternoon can be mall traffic, station traffic and beach traffic at the same time.
About 54% of residents were born outside the United States, and about 26% are 65 or older. Census table C16001 groups Russian, Polish and other Slavic languages: about 2,100 people age 5 and older, roughly 5.6% of that age group. The figure is not Russian alone. It is large enough that a household often has a newer driver, a parent on a foreign license, and a car that also goes to the beach on the causeway.
Coverage gaps we check for Aventura drivers
- Bodily injury liability, which Florida does not require of most drivers and which a mall-parking or causeway crash can need.
- Uninsured motorist coverage at your BI limits, and any old rejection form.
- The garaging ZIP. Aventura, Ojus and Sunny Isles Beach are different places. The car should be rated where it actually sleeps.
- Comprehensive for a car in an open mall lot, a station garage or under a tower: theft, hail, flood and falling debris.
- Collision for the low-speed hits in garage ramps and valet lanes, with a deductible you can pay.
- Rental reimbursement if the car is your way to the station or to work and Brightline does not replace it.
- Every household driver, including someone who just arrived and is still on a foreign license.
- Rideshare or delivery use. The personal policy usually does not cover the app-on hours.
- Medical payments coverage above PIP’s 80% of medical bills.

A registered car needs $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability, with no lapse. PIP pays 80% of reasonable medical bills and 60% of lost income regardless of fault, including, in general, you and resident relatives hit as pedestrians or cyclists. The mall crossings and the station drop-off are full of people on foot. Initial care has to start within 14 days, and the benefit is capped at $2,500 unless a doctor finds an emergency medical condition. Proposals to repeal PIP died in committee in March 2026.
Bodily injury liability is not required of most Florida drivers. The Insurance Research Council’s 2023 estimate put about 20.6% of the state’s drivers uninsured. Uninsured motorist coverage is what pays your injuries above PIP when that driver hits you. Insurers must offer it at your BI limits and can remove it only with a written rejection. No BI generally means no UM. With two or more cars, ask about stacking. Since March 24, 2023, if you are more than 50% at fault for your own injuries you generally recover nothing from the other driver, and the lawsuit deadline for most negligence claims is two years.
Licenses from another country
A visitor drives on a valid license from the country where they live. The Florida driver handbook describes the non-resident papers as that license plus an International Driving Permit. The permit translates the license. It is not a license. Carry it when the license is not in English. Residency, and then a 30-day clock to get a Florida license, starts if you work here, enroll a child in public school, register to vote, file for homestead, or stay more than six consecutive months. Registering the car takes a policy from a Florida-licensed agent, generally within 10 days of becoming a resident. A company may or may not accept a foreign license on the application. Send it. We will tell you whether we can place the policy. An approval is not a promise we make in advance.
Parked cars and a coast that has already seen wind
Hurricane Wilma in October 2005 brought the strongest winds aloft. The National Hurricane Center expected upper floors of South Florida high-rises to see more wind than the 10-meter reading, and parts of northern Miami-Dade likely had Category 2 conditions with gusts near 100 knots at street-measurement height. Cars in open lots along US-1 and in the lower levels of towers are hit by debris and by water. Comprehensive is the coverage for that, and it has to be on the policy before the storm is close enough that insurers stop writing changes. A crash with injury, death or at least $2,000 of apparent damage must be reported to police or the Florida Highway Patrol. Get care within 14 days so PIP stays available, then send us the claim number.

Car insurance in Aventura: common questions
Does the Brightline station change my car insurance?
The coverages do not change because you park at a train station. What matters is the garaging address, comprehensive for a car left in a lot, and liability if you are driving to or from West Dixie Highway. The station that opened on December 24, 2022 is just west of the city. Do not list it as the place the car lives unless the car actually stays there.
I live in Aventura and drive to Sunny Isles Beach on the causeway. Is that a different policy?
No. One Florida policy covers you on the Lehman Causeway and on Collins Avenue. The rating address is where the car is garaged, not every city you visit. If the car has moved from one ZIP to the other, the policy should be updated.
Can I insure a car with a foreign license?
Often we can start the file, and sometimes the company will not accept the license. Visitors may drive on a valid foreign license; an International Driving Permit is only a translation. After you become a Florida resident you have 30 days to get a Florida license, and you need a Florida policy to register the car. Send the license. We will not promise a placement before we see it.
Is uninsured motorist coverage required?
It is not required. Insurers must offer it with bodily injury liability, at the same limits, and a rejection has to be in writing. About one in five Florida drivers was uninsured in the 2023 estimate. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM.
How do I get a review without driving to Florida City?
Send a photo of the declarations page by WhatsApp to (971) 998-7313, by text or by email. An agent calls back within an hour during business hours. The Florida City office is by appointment. We do not have an Aventura office.
