Sunny Isles Beach drives on a single north–south road
Sunny Isles Beach sits on a barrier island in northeast Miami-Dade, with the Atlantic on the east and the Intracoastal Waterway on the west. The city incorporated on June 16, 1997. The 2020 Census counted 22,342 residents on about one square mile of land, roughly 22,100 people per square mile. The 2020–2024 Census estimates put the population near 22,400. That density is towers, not a street grid: about 19,700 housing units, and about 89% of them are in buildings with 50 or more units. Detached houses are about 2% of the stock.
Collins Avenue (State Road A1A) is the only continuous north–south road. South of the city it runs through Haulover Park toward Bal Harbour. North of it, A1A passes the Town of Golden Beach and then Hallandale Beach, in Broward. The way off the island to the mainland is the William Lehman Causeway (SR 856), which meets the island near the north end and runs west toward Aventura and North Miami Beach. If Collins is blocked by a crash, a flood or a closed lane, there is no parallel boulevard to switch to. The average commute is about 33 minutes, and about one in six workers who leave home for work travels 60 minutes or more.
About two-thirds of residents were born outside the United States, and about 27% are 65 or older. Census table C16001 counts people who speak Russian, Polish or another Slavic language at home as one line: about 4,400 residents age 5 and older, roughly 20% of that age group. The line is not a count of Russian alone. What it does mean for a car policy is a city of newcomers, seasonal residents and households where more than one adult drives, often with a license issued somewhere else.
Coverage gaps we check on Sunny Isles Beach auto policies
- Bodily injury liability. Florida does not require it of most drivers. On a one-road island, a rear-end chain can involve several cars.
- Uninsured motorist coverage at the same limits as BI, and a look at any written rejection still sitting in the file.
- Where the car is garaged. A policy that still shows another state, or a mainland ZIP, while the car sleeps in a Sunny Isles garage, is the wrong garaging address.
- Comprehensive for a car that sits. Wind-blown debris, a flooded garage and vandalism in a seasonal unit’s parking space are not collision claims.
- Collision with a deductible you can pay, for the low-speed scrapes in valet lanes and tight garage ramps.
- Medical payments coverage on top of PIP, which pays 80% of medical bills, not the whole bill.
- Every licensed driver in the household, including a relative who just moved in and is still using a foreign license.
- Rental reimbursement if Collins is your only way to work and the car will be in the shop.
- Work use. Delivery and rideshare driving usually needs its own endorsement. A personal policy often stops when the app is on.
🚗 Financing or leasing a new car? Ask about adding gap coverage to your auto policy. It can cover the difference between the car’s value and what you still owe if it’s totaled or stolen.
Learn about gap insurance →Florida’s minimum, on a street full of pedestrians
Every registered car needs $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability (PDL), kept in force with no lapse. PIP is no-fault coverage for your own injuries: 80% of reasonable medical bills and 60% of lost income. It generally also covers you and relatives who live with you if a car hits you while you are walking or cycling. That matters on Collins, where people cross between towers, the beach and the shops. The conditions are strict. Initial treatment has to start within 14 days, and benefits above $2,500 generally require a physician to find an emergency medical condition. Bills to repeal PIP died in committee in March 2026, so the system is unchanged for now.
What the law does not require of most drivers is bodily injury liability. The Insurance Research Council estimated that about 20.6% of Florida drivers were uninsured in 2023, about one in five. When that driver hurts you, uninsured motorist coverage (UM) is what responds above PIP. Insurers must offer UM at your BI limits. You can lower it or reject it only in writing. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM. If the household has two or more cars, ask whether UM is stacked. Since March 24, 2023, Florida’s modified comparative negligence rule has barred recovery from the other driver when you are found more than 50% at fault for your own injuries, and most negligence lawsuits now have a two-year deadline instead of four.
A foreign license, a Florida registration
Visitors may drive with a valid license from the country where they live. Florida’s driver handbook describes the non-resident exception as an International Driving Permit carried with that license. The permit is a translation, not a license by itself. Carry it if your license is not in English. You are treated as a Florida resident, and you then have 30 days to get a Florida license, if you take a job here, put a child in public school, register to vote, file for a homestead exemption, or live here more than six months in a row. To title and register a car you also need a policy from an agent licensed in Florida, generally within 10 days of becoming a resident. Whether a company will accept a foreign license on the application is an underwriting question. Send us the license and the declarations page. We will tell you what we can place. We do not promise a policy.
Wind upstairs, water in the garage
Hurricane Wilma crossed South Florida in October 2005. The National Hurricane Center concluded that parts of northern Miami-Dade, including this coast, likely saw Category 2 conditions at street level, with gusts near 100 knots, and that upper floors of high-rises saw stronger wind than the standard 10-meter measurement. Miami-Dade’s building office spent the weeks after the storm on high-rise repairs in Sunny Isles Beach, including windows boarded with plywood. A car in an open parking level or a ramp can be hit by that debris. Water in a below-grade garage is a different claim. Only comprehensive pays for flood, falling objects, hail or vandalism, and it has to be on the policy before a storm is already threatening. Insurers can stop accepting changes at that point.
After a crash with injuries, a death, or apparent damage of at least $2,000, Florida requires a report to the police, the sheriff or the Florida Highway Patrol. Photograph the cars, the other driver’s license and insurance card, and get medical care inside 14 days so PIP is not lost. Then call us with the claim number.

Car insurance in Sunny Isles Beach: common questions
Does living on a one-road island change what the policy covers?
The coverages are the same on any public road in Florida. What changes is the risk: Collins has no parallel street, the garages sit under towers, and a closure sends everyone onto the Lehman Causeway at once. The policy should name the real garaging address and include comprehensive, not only the legal minimum.
My car sits in the garage for months while I am away. What should I check?
Ask whether the policy limits how long the car can sit, and whether comprehensive is still in force while you are gone. A car damaged by water, debris or vandalism in the garage is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim. The conditions are specific to your policy, so send us the declarations page.
Can I insure a car with a foreign driver license?
You may be able to. Visitors with a valid foreign license can drive; an International Driving Permit is a translation that you carry with the license, not a license on its own. Once you are a Florida resident you have 30 days to get a Florida license, and you need a Florida policy to register the car. Send the license. We will say honestly whether we can place the policy. We do not promise an approval.
Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Sunny Isles Beach?
No. Insurers must offer it when you buy bodily injury liability, at the same limits, and you can reject it only in writing. About one in five Florida drivers was uninsured in the 2023 estimate. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM.
How do I send the policy if I never come to the office?
Photograph the declarations page and send it by WhatsApp to (971) 998-7313, by text, or by email. A licensed agent reviews it and calls you back within an hour during business hours. Office visits at the Florida City address are by appointment.
