Boca Raton traffic is an east–west problem
Boca Raton sits in southern Palm Beach County, with the Atlantic and the Intracoastal on the east and Florida’s Turnpike along the west. The 2020–2024 Census estimates put the population at about 100,200. About one in four residents is 65 or older, and about one in five was born outside the United States. Census table C16001 counts Russian, Polish and other Slavic languages as one line: about 2,600 residents age 5 and older, roughly 2.7% of that age group. The line is not a count of Russian alone.
The roads that matter are a grid, not a single beach street. I-95 runs north–south through the city. Florida’s Turnpike (SR 91) is the western bypass, the route south toward Florida City. Glades Road (SR 808) is the main east–west arterial, from the Turnpike and the university area across I-95 to Federal Highway (US-1) and the bridges toward the beach. Palmetto Park Road (SR 798) is the downtown east–west road, through the older center of the city and out to A1A on the barrier island. Congress Avenue, Military Trail and Lyons Road carry the north–south load between those highways. A crash on Glades Road at rush hour stacks traffic from the Turnpike to US-1. There is no causeway bottleneck of the kind a barrier-island city has, but the bridges to the beach still funnel A1A traffic onto Palmetto Park Road and Glades Road.
Commutes here are shorter than in much of Miami-Dade. The average one-way trip is about 21 minutes, and only about 4% of workers who leave home for work travel 60 minutes or more. That does not make the policy simpler. West of I-95 the housing is largely HOA and country-club communities built in the 1970s and 1980s, with two or three licensed drivers and a car that may sit for part of the year. About 4,700 housing units, roughly one in ten, were vacant for seasonal or occasional use.
Coverage gaps we check on Boca Raton auto policies
- Bodily injury liability. Florida does not require it of most drivers. Glades Road and I-95 crashes often involve more than one car.
- Uninsured motorist coverage at the same limits as BI, and a look at any written rejection still in the file.
- The garaging address. A car that sleeps in a Boca Raton community, or at a condo east of US-1, should not still show a garage in another state or another county.
- Comprehensive for a car that sits. Falling limbs, hail, floodwater on a low street and vandalism in a seasonal driveway are not collision claims.
- Collision with a deductible you can pay, including the low-speed scrapes in gated entries and crowded parking rows.
- Medical payments coverage on top of PIP, which pays 80% of medical bills, not the whole bill.
- Every licensed driver in the household, including a spouse or parent who is here for the season and still holds a foreign license.
- Rental reimbursement if the car will be in a shop and Glades Road is how you reach I-95.
- Work use. Delivery and rideshare driving usually needs its own endorsement. A personal policy often stops when the app is on.

Every registered car needs $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability (PDL), kept in force with no lapse. PIP is no-fault coverage for your own injuries: 80% of reasonable medical bills and 60% of lost income. It generally also covers you and relatives who live with you if a car hits you while you are walking or cycling, which is a real exposure on Palmetto Park Road and the campus streets along Glades Road. Initial treatment has to start within 14 days, and benefits above $2,500 generally require a physician to find an emergency medical condition. Bills to repeal PIP died in committee in March 2026, so the system is unchanged for now.
What the law does not require of most drivers is bodily injury liability. The Insurance Research Council estimated that about 20.6% of Florida drivers were uninsured in 2023, about one in five. When that driver hurts you, uninsured motorist coverage (UM) is what responds above PIP. Insurers must offer UM at your BI limits. You can lower it or reject it only in writing. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM. If the household has two or more cars, ask whether UM is stacked. Since March 24, 2023, Florida’s modified comparative negligence rule has barred recovery from the other driver when you are found more than 50% at fault for your own injuries, and most negligence lawsuits now have a two-year deadline instead of four.
A foreign license and a Florida registration
Visitors may drive with a valid license from the country where they live. Florida’s driver handbook describes the non-resident exception as an International Driving Permit carried with that license. The permit is a translation, not a license by itself. Carry it if your license is not in English. You are treated as a Florida resident, and you then have 30 days to get a Florida license, if you take a job here, put a child in public school, register to vote, file for a homestead exemption, or live here more than six months in a row. To title and register a car you also need a policy from an agent licensed in Florida, generally within 10 days of becoming a resident. Whether a company will accept a foreign license on the application is an underwriting question. Send us the license and the declarations page. We will tell you what we can place. We do not promise a policy.
Wind and standing water, without a hurricane overhead
Palm Beach County is not in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. That building-code zone is Miami-Dade and Broward only, and it does not change what an auto policy pays. Hurricane Wilma, in October 2005, still put hurricane-force wind across this part of the coast, and the National Hurricane Center found stronger wind on upper floors than at the standard 10-meter measurement. During Hurricane Irma in September 2017, a weather station in Boca Raton measured a sustained wind of 51 mph and a gust of 79 mph. The National Weather Service reported Category 1 gusts, about 80 to 90 mph, across Palm Beach County, with structural damage lighter than farther south and power out for many customers. A car under a tree, in an open lot, or in a few inches of water on a low street is a comprehensive claim if that coverage is on the policy before the storm is already threatening. Insurers can stop accepting changes at that point. Flood water is not a collision claim.
After a crash with injuries, a death, or apparent damage of at least $2,000, Florida requires a report to the police, the sheriff or the Florida Highway Patrol. On I-95 and the Turnpike that report usually goes to the Highway Patrol. Photograph the cars, the other driver’s license and insurance card, and get medical care inside 14 days so PIP is not lost. Then call us with the claim number.

Car insurance in Boca Raton: common questions
Does a Boca Raton address change the coverages Florida requires?
No. PIP and property-damage liability are statewide. What changes is the garage address, how many drivers use the car, and whether comprehensive is on the policy for a vehicle that sits in an HOA community or a condo garage. The legal minimum does not include bodily injury liability or uninsured motorist coverage.
My car sits at the house for part of the year. What should I check?
Ask whether the policy limits how long the car can sit, and whether comprehensive stays in force while you are away. Damage from water, a falling limb or vandalism is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim. Those conditions are specific to your policy. Send the declarations page.
Can I insure a car with a foreign driver license?
You may be able to. Visitors with a valid foreign license can drive. An International Driving Permit is a translation you carry with the license, not a license on its own. Once you are a Florida resident you have 30 days to get a Florida license, and you need a Florida policy to register the car. Send the license. We will say honestly whether we can place the policy. We do not promise an approval.
Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Boca Raton?
No. Insurers must offer it when you buy bodily injury liability, at the same limits, and you can reject it only in writing. About one in five Florida drivers was uninsured in the 2023 estimate. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM.
How do I send the policy if I am not driving to Florida City?
Photograph the declarations page and send it by WhatsApp to (971) 998-7313, by text, or by email. A licensed agent reviews it and calls you back within an hour during business hours. The drive is about 80 miles. Office visits are by appointment.
