A wide city with the beach on one edge
Pompano Beach is in northern Broward County. The Atlantic and the Intracoastal are the eastern edge. Hillsboro Inlet is the north end of that beach. I-95 runs through the western side of the city, and the neighborhoods keep going west of the freeway. The 2020–2024 Census estimates put the population at about 114,100. About 34% of residents were born outside the United States. Census table C16001 counts Russian, Polish and other Slavic languages as one line: about 1,300 residents age 5 and older, roughly 1.2% of that age group. The line is not a count of Russian alone. About 8,100 housing units, roughly 13% of the stock, were vacant for seasonal or occasional use.
A1A is the beach road, past the pier and the inlet. When it is blocked, beach traffic comes back across the Intracoastal to Federal Highway (US-1) and to Dixie Highway, the older parallel just inland. Atlantic Boulevard and Sample Road (SR 834) are the east–west arterials that reach I-95. Copans Road is the other crossover people use when Atlantic is jammed. A crash or a bridge delay on the beach does not stay on the beach. It lands on Federal Highway.
The average one-way commute is about 27 minutes. About 10% of workers who leave home for work travel 60 minutes or more, a higher share than in Boca Raton and a sign of how many drives run south toward Fort Lauderdale and Miami-Dade, or west to the inland suburbs. The car may be garaged under a beach or Intracoastal condominium, in a house west of Federal Highway, or, for about 2% of the city’s housing units, at a manufactured home. The policy has to name that address.
Coverage gaps we check on Pompano Beach auto policies
- Bodily injury liability. Florida does not require it of most drivers. Sample Road and Federal Highway crashes often involve more than one car.
- Uninsured motorist coverage at the same limits as BI, and a look at any written rejection still in the file.
- The garaging address, whether that is a condo garage east of the Intracoastal or a driveway west of I-95.
- Comprehensive for a car that sits, and for water. Seasonal spaces, falling debris and floodwater are not collision claims.
- Collision with a deductible you can pay, including parking-garage ramps and low-speed hits on A1A.
- Medical payments coverage on top of PIP, which pays 80% of medical bills, not the whole bill.
- Every licensed driver in the household, including someone who is here for the season on a foreign license.
- Rental reimbursement if the car is in a shop and Federal Highway is the way to I-95.
- Work use. Delivery and rideshare driving usually needs its own endorsement.

Learn about gap insurance →Florida’s minimum, on Federal Highway
Every registered car needs $10,000 of Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and $10,000 of Property Damage Liability (PDL), kept in force with no lapse. PIP is no-fault coverage for your own injuries: 80% of reasonable medical bills and 60% of lost income. It generally also covers you and relatives who live with you if a car hits you while you are walking or cycling. Atlantic Boulevard and the beach streets have that exposure. Initial treatment has to start within 14 days, and benefits above $2,500 generally require a physician to find an emergency medical condition. Bills to repeal PIP died in committee in March 2026, so the system is unchanged for now.
What the law does not require of most drivers is bodily injury liability. The Insurance Research Council estimated that about 20.6% of Florida drivers were uninsured in 2023, about one in five. When that driver hurts you, uninsured motorist coverage (UM) is what responds above PIP. Insurers must offer UM at your BI limits. You can lower it or reject it only in writing. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM. If the household has two or more cars, ask whether UM is stacked. Since March 24, 2023, Florida’s modified comparative negligence rule has barred recovery from the other driver when you are found more than 50% at fault for your own injuries, and most negligence lawsuits now have a two-year deadline instead of four.
Wind the airport recorded, and water the map decides
Broward is in the High-Velocity Hurricane Zone. That is a building rule. For a car, the record that matters is what the wind and the water have already done. During Hurricane Irma in September 2017, the National Weather Service station at Pompano Beach measured a sustained wind of 69 mph and a gust of 88 mph. Across most of coastal and metro Broward, gusts were about 80 to 100 mph. Hurricane Wilma, in October 2005, was the harder wind. The National Hurricane Center found that parts of Broward likely had Category 2 conditions, with gusts near 100 knots at street level and stronger wind on upper floors. Debris from that wind is a comprehensive claim if the coverage is already on the policy.
Flood is the same coverage, not collision. Pompano Beach was not the center of the April 12, 2023 rainfall that flooded Fort Lauderdale, and this page does not assign that city’s rain total here. The city still has low streets along the Intracoastal, a beach that takes surge, and inland lots that pond in a heavy rain. Broward’s FEMA flood maps took effect July 31, 2024, and a lot can sit in a different zone than the prior map. A car in that water is a comprehensive claim only if comprehensive was bound before the water arrived. Insurers can stop accepting changes once a storm is threatening. After a crash with injuries, a death, or apparent damage of at least $2,000, Florida requires a report to the police, the sheriff or the Florida Highway Patrol. Get medical care inside 14 days so PIP is not lost, then call us with the claim number.
A foreign license, and why the call comes to Florida City
Visitors may drive with a valid license from the country where they live. Florida’s driver handbook describes the non-resident exception as an International Driving Permit carried with that license. The permit is a translation, not a license by itself. You are treated as a Florida resident, and you then have 30 days to get a Florida license, if you take a job here, put a child in public school, register to vote, file for a homestead exemption, or live here more than six months in a row. To title and register a car you also need a policy from an agent licensed in Florida, generally within 10 days of becoming a resident. Whether a company will accept a foreign license is an underwriting question. Send the license and the declarations page. We will tell you what we can place. We do not promise a policy. M&K Agency is a family-owned agency with a team of 12 and more than 5,000 clients across Florida. Send us your policy and we’ll check your coverage.

Car insurance in Pompano Beach: common questions
Does a Pompano Beach garage change what Florida requires?
No. PIP and property-damage liability are statewide. The garaging address still has to be the real one, on the beach, on Federal Highway or west of I-95. Comprehensive is what responds to flood and to a car that sits. The legal minimum does not include bodily injury liability or uninsured motorist coverage.
Was the April 2023 Fort Lauderdale flood a Pompano Beach auto claim?
The extreme rainfall NOAA measured that day was centered on Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Dania Beach and Wilton Manors. This page does not treat that total as a Pompano Beach measurement. Flood water anywhere, including along the Intracoastal here, is still a comprehensive claim, and only if that coverage was already on the policy.
Can I insure a car with a foreign driver license?
You may be able to. Visitors with a valid foreign license can drive. An International Driving Permit is a translation you carry with the license, not a license on its own. Once you are a Florida resident you have 30 days to get a Florida license, and you need a Florida policy to register the car. Send the license. We do not promise an approval.
Is uninsured motorist coverage required in Pompano Beach?
No. Insurers must offer it when you buy bodily injury liability, at the same limits, and you can reject it only in writing. About one in five Florida drivers was uninsured in the 2023 estimate. Without BI you generally cannot buy UM.
How do I send the policy without driving to Florida City?
Photograph the declarations page and send it by WhatsApp to (971) 998-7313, by text, or by email. A licensed agent reviews it and calls you back within an hour during business hours. The drive is about 71 miles. We do not have an office in Pompano Beach. Visits are by appointment.
